It gives me great pleasure to welcome you all again to Trafalgar Square for this year’s Diwali on the Square celebrations.
I love Diwali which is one of the most joyous and important festivals in the calendar, symbolising the triumph of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance.
At a time when divisions are on the rise across the world, and bad actors are stoking hatred and perpetuating misinformation, Diwali on the Square stands as a powerful reminder of the inclusive values we hold dear in London. It shows our capital at its very best: open, welcoming and proud of the diversity that makes us who we are.
Today’s celebration brings Hindu, Sikh and Jain communities to the heart of our capital to share their traditions, culture and stories with Londoners and visitors of all backgrounds. It is a reminder of how our diversity is one of our greatest strengths and a shining example of how we celebrate that together.
This year’s programme is packed with music, dance, storytelling, workshops and delicious food for the whole family to enjoy. Whether you are lighting a diya, tying a sari, trying yoga, or simply soaking up the atmosphere, there is something for everyone to experience.
I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to the Diwali in London committee, whose dedication, creativity and volunteer spirit make this wonderful event possible each year. I am also grateful to our partners, sponsors and all those working behind the scenes to bring today’s celebration to life.
As we celebrate Diwali together, let us take inspiration from its central message of light and hope. In the face of challenges at home and abroad, events like this remind us of the strength we find in community and our shared responsibility to stand against division as we build a better London for all.
From my family to yours, I wish you a happy and blessed Diwali.
