Message from the Mayor

Welcome to Diwali on the Square 2007. Since it first
began in 2002, Diwali on the Square has attracted
many thousands of Londoners and visitors to share and
participate in the joyous occasion of Diwali, the festival
of lights. For London’s Hindus, Sikhs and Jains, Diwali is
a hugely important occasion that represents the power
of good to triumph over evil. This essential theme has relevance for all of
London’s communities as it signifies the value of co-operation and mutual
respect between peoples of differing faiths and backgrounds.
This year Diwali on the Square comes at the end of the India Now season, a
unique festival that has celebrated the richness of Indian culture through an
extensive programme of events and festivals across London. Later this year
I will be visiting Delhi and Mumbai and plan to open London offices in both
cities. This initiative is intended to extend the increasingly strong ties between
India and London and further develop mutually beneficial links in the future.
I would like thank the Diwali in London Committee and the sponsors and
supporters of Diwali on the Square 2007 and wish everyone a happy and
prosperous Diwali.

Ken Livingstone

Mayor of London
